The AC orifice tube is a specific type of expansion device.  It serves the same purpose in handling the pressurized refrigerant.  It is the pressure drop device put into place to address the highly pressurize refrigerant.  The refrigerant enters the ac orifice tube after being cooled through the condenser which.  The tube further cools it down to approximately 32 degrees fahrenheit by allowing the outside air to remove the heat.  In turn, this also decreases the refrigerant's  pressure.
