The AC compressor is the heart of every car's ac system.  The unit is single handedly responsbile for pumping the refrigerant throughout the entire system.  Also, it compresses the refrigerant at exteremly high speeds often reaching upwards of 10,000 RPMs.  The refrigerant is then superheated and sent to the condenser. Whenever you replace a compressor, you should always replace the drier.  The drier keeps all the moisture and debris out.  Think of it as the oil and air filter of the AC unit.
